# Maths Mate Sheet 2 Question 23 (Term 4 2014)

Prediction: I predict this problem will be about working backwards.

Read: I think of a number , add 9 and then multiply it by 3. If the result is 30, what was the original number?

Clarification: None needed.

The Big Question: What was the original number?

Mathematician’s Toolbox: Work backwards/Have I seen a similar problem?

Solving: First I worked backwards from 30. I used division because multiplication is division backwards. So I did 30 divided 3 which is 10. After that I subtracted 9 because addition is the inverse operation of subtraction. So I subtracted 9 and I got the result of 1.

Conclusion: So the answer was 1.

This wizard isn’t to be trusted I told myself crawling back into the wall. Everyday he is tending to his cauldron, creating something that is not possible! I knew if he knew that I was in his domain I would be zapped out of the thin air, yet that is the same with any rat. whenever the wizard ventures out of his tower is when I can even dare to come out of hiding. Sometimes I wonder what his intentions are. Magic is uncontrollable yet powerful so there must be reasons behind using it. However when ventured out to see what he has been hiding I was vaporized by his creation. I still don’t know what it is.

Read: I think of a number , subtract 5 and then divide it be 3. If the result is 6, what was the original number?

Clarification: None needed.

The Big Question: What was the original number?

Mathematician’s Toolbox: Work backwards/Have I seen a similar problem?

Solving: First I worked backwards from 6. I used multiplication because division is multiplication backwards. So I did 6 times 3 which is 18. After that I added 5 because subtraction is the inverse operation of addition. So I added 5 and I got the result of 23.

Conclusion: So the answer was 23.

# …I Could not Believe the Smell… (100 WC Week 7 Term 4 2014)

Mice are different from rats. I was told that when I was as small as a shrew. I thought the rats were the same. Once I went into the rats domain in the sewer. I looked around, perhaps I had poor vision when I was young because these rats were different. The rats were much bigger than me, they were also rather unclean. And I could not believe the smell. I don’t think you can expect more from animals that live in the sewers. As a mouse I felt overpowered by these rats. I decided to leave with my new understanding.

# …Suddenly I was Able to See Again… (100 WC Week 6 Term 4 2014)

The poison went on for a long time, but finally I was able to regain consciousness. Suddenly I was able to see again. The poison had made me weak but I was alive. I looked around and saw the other rats fleeing into the cold. This place was full of traps and poisons. I tried to follow them but I couldn’t keep up while I could still feel the poison. Then a creature came. I knew was done for. I tried to drag myself into a hiding spot but it was too late it had seen me. It clawed me up and everything went dark again.

# Literature Circles Reflection (Term 4 2014)

• Name of Book: The Game of Goose
• Author: Ursula Dubosarsky
• Year of Publication: 2007
• Group Members and Roles: Jack- Discussion Director, Jordan/Me- Captain of Comprehension, Ece- Passage Master, Ben P- Connector, Emily- Word Watcher, and Ayla- Tally Master.
• What Worked Well-: Most people in our group completed their homework and played their roles. Jack directed the group very well and I think everyone was included. Jack also played a big part in creating our podcast.
• Considerations for the Future: While The Game of the Goose was a blast to read it was extremely easy and short for year 5/6 reading standards. I think harder books should’ve been chosen for the program at a higher reading level.
• Podcasts: While recording our podcast it was generally hard to have little background noise. The hardest thing in my opinion was controlling your volume. But trieing to do impressions of the books characters was fun. i also think interesting listening to the other groups podcasts and learning about their groups books.

# Extreme Weather Project Reflection (Term 4 2014)

For my extreme weather project my partner was Lilli and our topic was floods.

Most of our research and information was generally found through prior knowledge. But on occasion we used the internet to pick up key details such as repair costs.

We used note taking on one – note yet, since most of our information was what we knew prior to the assignment not much note taking was used.

I think my partner (Lilli) and I worked well together. We both pulled out weight and regularly met to assign tasks to do in our free time. Both of us always completed our tasks on time and ended up having our project done early.

The format we used was a PowerPoint. We chose this because we had more experience using the program compared to other options.

The tasks I did were creating the PowerPoint (half with the help of my partner), answering half the questions, helping create the information and content and completing research.
