Landfill (BTN Term 4 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Landfill (BTN Clip Released: 04/03/14)

This BTN clip was about the process that general waste takes before it’s put into landfill. It mentioned that general waste is first taken from your bin into a rubbish truck. It showed that next the rubbish is bought to a transfer station where illegal rubbish and recyclables are separated from the standard waste. It  also mention that next the remaining waste is transported to a landfill where it is stored under a layer of soil and is compacted underneath the soil.

I understand how the process of waste disposal works and how it effects everyone. I also understand the steps in which rubbish takes to be disposed. It’s first taken from a general waste bin into a rubbish truck, then it’s put at a transfer station to be separated and stored for a short amount of time and then it is finally taken to landfill.

A question I still have is: “How many landfills are there in Australia?”.

Ebola Free (BTN Term 4 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Ebola Free (BTN Clip Released: 17/11/2015)

This BTN clip was about how in Sierra Leone they have managed to eradicate Ebola completely from their country. It mentioned that Ebola is a disease which started to spread in an outbreak in Guinea. It showed that Ebola is spread by body fluids such as saliva and blood this can make it spread fast over a short time. The Ebola virus has been spread from West Africa to the USA, some of Europe and the UK.

I understand how many people in West Africa alone have been effected by Ebola and how it’s had such a strong impact on West Africa and the world, Ebola has killed 11,000 people in West Africa and has made 28,000 infected (Currently). I also understand how the effort to fight Ebola is starting to work and because Sierra Leone is now Ebola free we now have evidence that quarantining people and carefully treating them is working.

A question I still have is: “Which specific countries or states in Europe and the USA have been effected by Ebola?”.

Asbestos Threat (BTN Term 4 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Asbestos Threat (BTN Clip Released: 11/06/2013)

This BTN clip was about asbestos and how it has been recently discovered in telecommunication pits across the country. It mentioned that asbestos is a mineral that is waterproof, fireproof and is strong so it was used in many buildings. It showed that asbestos was found to later have harmful properties if it’s broken down into dust, when this dust is inhaled ,overtime, it can cause lung cancer. It also mentioned that asbestos was banned for use as a building material in 1989 because of it’s harmful effects when disturbed.

I understand how harmful asbestos can be and how it is still a relevant risk when renovating a home even with it being banned for future use 26 years ago. I also understand that because asbestos is used in an average of one in three homes it threatens most people in Australia and should be carefully removed when found.

A question I still have is: “How many people have been effected by asbestos?”.

Earthquakes (BTN Term 4 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Earthquakes (BTN Clip Released: 09/03/2010)

This BTN clip was about the earthquakes especially the ones that happened at the beginning of 2010 in Haiti and Chile. It mentioned that the earthquake in Haiti caused my damage despite the fact that the earthquake in Chile was more powerful. It showed that Chile is in the Ring of Fire which is an area with frequent earthquakes. It also mentioned that the casualties and injuries of the Haiti earthquake were about 2000 but for the Chile earthquake it was about 500.

I understand how the reason Chile suffered less damage because they were more prepared. I also understand that the amount of money the countries each had effected how they could attempt to withstand the earthquake.

A question I still have is: “Can an earthquakes force go above the Richter scale’s cap?”.

War Animals (BTN Term 4 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: War Animals (BTN Clip Released: 24/04/2012)

This BTN clip was about how animals are used in wars to help the war effort. It mentioned that animals help war efforts by delivering messages, tracking where explosives are hidden, etc. It said that animals that have done very satisfactory or tremendous jobs are awarded with medals such as the Dickin Medal, which is awarded to animals for showing amazing bravery. It also mentioned that animals have been used in wars since cavalry rode on horses.

I understand how much animals have helped Australia and other countries win wars because of there ability to do things humans couldn’t do themselves. I also understand how people used animals to help fight wars, such as when carrier pigeons are delivering messages they have the message tied to their leg and put in a plastic tube so it can be delivered.

A question I still have is: “What other animals have been used in wars besides donkeys, dogs, etc?”.

Public Money (BTN Term 3 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Public Money (BTN Clip Released: 28/07/2015)

This BTN clip was about how in parliament the tax payer money is reportedly being paid on things that it shouldn’t be used for such as recently when Bronwyn Bishop spent a large amount of money on a helicopter flight from Melbourne to Geelong.  It mentioned that the tax payer money or “public money” is the equivalent of an allowance for politicians, although unlike a wage it’s strictly for business purposes. It showed how the tax payer money is in a way entrusted to the government and its members, so it’s not spent on things that are prohibited that’s why there’s recent controversy surrounding the topic. It also mentioned that the current speaker has had controversy surrounding her because of this, even though it wasn’t mentioned in the clip Bronwyn Bishop has resigned likely because of this and some other reasons.

I understand that when the parliament is entrusted with the public’s money it should be kept strictly to reasonable business expenses because then people can exploit how they use it. I also understand how there are unwritten rules about how politicians should use tax payer money and it’s only because of these unwritten rules of trust that use of this money isn’t exploited or overlooked.

A question I still have is: “Have there been any other significant instances of tax payer money being misused?”.

Greece in Trouble (BTN Term 3 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Greece in Trouble (BTN Clip Released: 21/07/2015)

This BTN clip was about the recent financial difficulties Greece is going through and the loan that has come through from neighboring European countries. It mentioned that the European government has given a loan of several billion dollars to Greece. It mentioned how the financial crisis in Greece started, (Because of a year when the government spent too much money). It also said that the main objection the Greek public had to the loan was austerity.

I understand why it is so important to restore Greece with the loan money even though there is the consequence of austerity because it will stop many riots that I myself have even been through and once the loan is paid off it will be beneficial to the country extremely. I also understand austerity is needed for the country to pay back the loan because without restricting the money given to the Greek public extremely Greece could be in debt for centuries.

A question I still have is: “What year is Greece expected to return to a stable economical state?”.

GST Changes (BTN Term 3 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: GST Changes (BTN Clip Released: 04/11/2014)

This BTN clip was about the GST and how it may be changed soon. It mentioned the the GST is an acronym for goods and services tax. It also mentioned that the GST is included on all products we buy besides some exceptions such as basic food items including: bread, meat, milk, fish, vegetables, etc. It also showed that the GST makes up 10% of the price of most products besides the ones I’ve stated previously, this 10% raises approximately 50 billion dollars per year.

I understand what impact any change made to the GST would have as everyone living in Australia will be effected in some way by it. I also understand that the GST here is the primary tax that people pay and because of that it’s the best source of income for the state governments.

A question I still have is: “Why do the Americans not include their GST on the price tag?”.

School Economics (BTN Term 3 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: School Economics (BTN Clip Released: 05/02/2013)

This BTN clip was about why the Australian Curriculum was changed to include lessons on economics. It mentioned what purpose the lessons would serve, namely to teach children how the economy works. And it also mentioned why it’s not focused on having a stable job but instead making better decisions with money.

I understand what impact economics lessons will have on how the economy behaves in the future as people educated in Australia will be able to make smarter financial decisions. I also understand why it’s important to be taught basic economics at a young age because it means if you are confused in future or there is something you can’t understand financially you’ll already have the knowledge to work around it.

A question I still have is: “What economic breakdowns are likely to happen in the future?”.

July 21

Antarctica (BTN Term 3 2015)

Behind The News – This clip was called: Antarctica (BTN Clip Released: 07/04/2009)

This BTN clip was about the reasons why increasing numbers of scientists are venturing into the icy wasteland of Antarctica. It mentioned that Antarctica is technically a desert because of the lack of rainfall and is the driest, windiest and coldest place on Earth. It mentioned that the reason so many scientists are coming there is to study climate change.

I understand why it is important to research and find out about how the climate has change and how we may be able to revert it because it can show people how the world has changed over large periods of time. I also understand how discoveries beneath the ice or in the ice can influence the direction of research on climate change is headed this will greatly increase our understanding of places like this.

A question I still have is: “Has life ever inhabited Antarctica and if so what happened to it?”.
